Chase, Salmon P.

Name: Salmon P. Chase
Reason: Although not born in Ohio Mr. Chase practiced law in Ohio and championed emancipation and defended runaway slaves. He was a governor of Ohio and under Abraham Lincoln he modernized the Treasury Dept. and was greatly responsible for funding the Civil War effort in the North. He supported Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. After he resigned from the Treasury he served the country as chief justice of the Supreme Court. Mr. Chase was an ambitious man and wanted to be president. Eventhough he did not achieve that goal he served his country and his state of Ohio with great distinction and honor.

Name: Salmon P. Chase
Reason: In addiotion to comments previously submitted, it should be noted that a rather recently refurbished statue of Salmon P. Chase stands (along with Ohio's other "Jewels") on the Statehouse lawn. It could either be moved to Statuary Hall or a copy could be made without the expense of a new creation by an artist. In fact the foundry or studio that did the refurbishing of "Jewels" statues probably has exact measurements for each of them.
