Name: William "Dummy" Hoy
Reason: Baseball is as American as apple pie. There is no one living in America who has not heard of, attended, watched or played a game of baseball. How appropriate then to submit to the statuary, William "Dummy" Hoy, the man credited with the creation of baseball hand signals used by every team, every player in the US. Dummy How came by these signals naturally. Being deaf, Hoy used American Sign Language to communicate with others. One of a very rare breed of deaf individuals to play any type of pro sport, Hoy's need for clarity in communication evolved into a system still in use today! What a credit to Ohio! Thank you Dummy Hoy for this ongoing legacy to baseball and Ohio.

Reason: What would be baseball without hand signals for verbally called "Ball" or "Strike". We all owe to this Dummy Hoy for making the umpire provide hand signals and to be very visible to the batter and everybody on and off the field. My vote goes to his well deserving person.

Reason: for Breaking Down Barriers, "Dummy" Hoy will not be picked because although he is a pefect candidate, achieving great things and leaving a legacy that the world views almost daily. But he will most likely NOT be chosen because he is disabled. Socety treats the disabled as if they don't exist. Even as the entire world watches his contribution to the game of baseball, the man who contributed the most only second to Abner Doubleday himself, remains anonymous to them. My vote is for William "Dummy" Hoy. Let's include the entire population.

Reason: Aside from being an outstanding ball player at the turn of the century, it is said that he is the one who invented the hand signals umpires use today. Some say it was Umpire Klem, but I know it isn't true. I was married to Dummy's grandson, Judson Hoy. Jud dies back in 1993. Please consider Dummy's worthiness. He is truly an inspiration to all deaf boys and girls.

Name: William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy
Reason: William Ellsworth “Dummy” Hoy was born in Houcktown, Ohio and deceased in OH. He was an incredible pro baseball player in the later 19th century. To this day he has not enrolled into the Baseball Hall of Fame considering the records he broke and his contributions to the national sport of baseball. He came up with the hand signals that umpires use to call strikes and ball today. What makes him unique from the rest that he was Deaf and yet he was capable to accomplish many things and is an example to many of perseverance and humanity. Williman Ellsworth Hoy is long overdue for state recognition for a Ohioan and I can only hope the committee will consider to nominate him. Ohio should be proud of him. Thank you.

Reason: I would highly recommend to see William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy to be chosen to replace one of the statues in the National Statuary Hall. He was a hero to the Deaf community and the baseball/softball community for an initiative idea to use mechanic signals to use strike, ball, safe and out. These signals are still used today. Thanks to Dummy Hoy. Please have him to be one of the statues to represent deaf children and adults all over the country.

Name: Dummy Hoy
Reason: Dummy Hoy is a hero to the deaf community all across our country. He is an inspiration to anyone that believes you can follow your dreams to make something of your life.As valedictorian of his class from the Ohio School for the deaf, he had settled into working as a cobbler and wishing he could play baseball. After being seen by a scout, the 5'4" deaf boy, who had always been told he was too small left for Wisconsin to find a job on a ball club. he had nothing to back him up but his desire to play ball and his belief in himself. He made the club in Oshkosh, and the rest is history. dummy Hoy became one of the premier center fielders of his time, tracking down more fly balls than anyone in the pre-modern era of baseball. he was also one of the best lead-off hitters, with an on-base % of .386 for his career. His team mates and fans loved him. he had some very influential team mates to whom he was always ready to teach sign language. His infectious positive attitude made his way for him as he played on six different major league teams in four major leagues, including the Chicago White sox pennant winning team in 1901. One time he threw out 3 runners at home plate in one game. His catcher on the Washington team was Connie Mack. dummy Hoy was a success and beloved everywhere he played. Fans used to stand and wave their arms after he made an exceptionaly good catch.

Reason: this is continued - After his playing career, hoy settled in Cincinnati, his favorite city, and where he had been married. he and his wife operated a dairy farm, and helped in the war effort during WWI. he remained active in the community, helping young deaf people lead successful lives. he also stayed in touch with his team mates like Connie Mack, Clark Griffith, and Honus Wagner. hoy was asked to throw out the first pitch in the 1961 World Series in Cincinnati at age 99. he stands as an example to all of us of someone who made their life successful by their belief in themself and determination. he really is a hero not just to the baseball community and the deaf community, but to every American.

Reason: This is a simple answer... what would baseball be without hand signals? Every sport has its own genre - and in Baseball, how would a batter (as well as the players on the field) know what is happening? Could you imagine an outfielder trying to hear what the home plate umpire making the call? The obvious hand signal as requested by Dummy Hoy changed the game and the landscape of baseball forever!!! Now, we can sit back and relax and watch the game with pleasure - and nothing could be more fitting to have his statue in the U.S. Capitol. People will go by his statue, and say 'This is the man who made baseball more enjoyable.'
