Wright Brothers

Name: The Wright Brothers
Reason: The inspirational story of two bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio, who invented the airplane without government assistance or government subsidy. They studied the wings of birds, they built the engine, they sewed the wings, they carried the parts of the plane in pieces to Kittyhawk which was chosen after careful study of wind charts, and they were the first test pilots. The two brothers lived modestly with their sister, Katherine, in their home in Dayton, The first practical airplane, the Wright Flyer III, was built and flown outside of Dayton (near Wright Patterson Air Force Base). Time Magazine named them in the top ten individuals who lived in the 20th Century. Ohio's quarter features the airplane built by the Wright Brothers.

Name: Wilbur and Orville Wright
Reason: Their contribution to the world is boundless. Without their contribution of flight, discovery to the far reaches of the world to space travel would not have possible for so many people. Space travel alone with all the contributions to our society are boundless as well. We should highlight ingenuity and discovery because that is how we grow as a state and a country.

Name: Wright Brothers
Reason: True immortals. They will never be meet with the question, who are they. The inventors of the boat and the carriage are unknown, but the inventors of the airplane are, and they were Ohioans.

Name: The Wright Brothers
Reason: I think that the Wright Brothers would be good examples of people from Ohio. I think so because they built the airplane. Thats important because without airplanes, transportation would be slower and more difficult. We might not have even made it to the moon! It also cool that they started out as bicycle shop owners but followed their dreams and literally soared in the air.

Name: The Wright Brothers
Reason: Without a doubt they are the most recognised and their contribution to the world the greatest. I can think of no one that even comes close and I see no reason to even debate it.

Name: The Wright Brothers
Reason: If you can only pick one, then I would say choose Orville Wright.
Sent: Thu 10/1/2009 2:31 PM

Name: The Wright Brothers
Reason: If you can only pick one, then I would say choose Orville Wright. For two reasons, one: Orville was born in Ohio, while Wilbur was born in Indiana. Two: Having one or both Wright brothers would help go along with the theme of "Ohio: Birthday Place of Aviation Pioneers," which was on the Ohio Quarter. With President Garfield as the other statue, and the Wright Brothers as the other, these two statues would represent what Ohio is most commonly known for: Mother of Presidents, and Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers.

Name: Orville and Wilbur Wright
Reason: They were Ohio's best and represent the initiation of flight...carried on later by two other great Ohioans, John Glenn and Neil Armstong.
Sent: Wed 10/14/2009 3:05 PM

Name: Orville and Wilbur Wright
Reason: Historical fathers of flight. John Glen and Neil Armstrong followed them, from Ohio. Despite the "rule" for ONE person, this needs to be an exception...SURELY there is a way to secure this, given the uniqueness of our situation. I am confident, if you asked, both Armstong and Glenn would send supporting letters. The other names I have read who are being considered are not even close to the Wrights.
